Botanica e la notte: 2020 Promemoria collection presented during the maison&objet | Promemoria

“Botanica e la Notte” (Botany and the Night) is a capsule collection born from a meeting between Romeo Sozzi and Sergio Perrero, a true artist of fabrics. The name is inspired by the drawings in botanic museums; small and perfectly elliptical leaves like the Ficus, large fringed leaves like from the banana tree, fan shaped leaves typical of the Ginkgo.

“Last year” explains Romeo Sozzi “we presented our new collection of fabrics, a big job which lasted several years. We decided not to include some of them in the catalogue and this left us with a considerable meters of fabrics. We decided to entrust these fabrics to Sergio, who re-worked them and transformed them into unique pieces”, continues Romeo Sozzi.

“The original collection”, explains Sergio, “was the stimulus for an aesthetic and ethical research which began from the existing, so that the excellence of these silks, linens, velvets and wools were not lost but rather transformed into something new in line with the fabric research conducted by the company”.

Various manufacturing techniques are used to create these unique fabrics, including overlapping, matching and sewing with cashmere threads that reveal botanic themed designs and various processes that make the fabrics softer and more pleasant to the touch.

Paris is the perfect place to present these fabrics, applied on two different Promemoria pieces and presented together with artistic tapestries. The two pieces are Chelsea, the armchair with its seat in silk and structure in velvet and the dormeuse Bombay in oak with details in bronze and seat in wool and velvet.

The project is in its infant stages, and what was presented in Paris, just an anteprima. Together with Promemoria, Sergio Perrero is continuing research into new ways of working fabrics, innovative, ground-breaking ways to create unique pieces.

Sergio Perrero

Sergio Perrero, an eclectic Italian artist who boasts collaborations with many fashion and design brands, was born in Turin in 1950. In the 70s, after his studies in architecture, he created scenographies, installations and projects for cinema and television. It was in the early 1980s that he began his long term relationship with the world of textiles, when he began to deal with textile research in the fashion and furniture sector. In the same years he collaborated with Pitti Filati on studies of special fibres and opened his own company for the design and transformation of knitted fabrics for the fashion clothing world. Subsequently, Perrero focused on the production of large sizes fabrics, rugs and tapestries, and - in a futuristic way - he faced the theme of traditional non-consumption and recycling. Since that moment until today he has acted as a consultant to the world of fashion and furniture, keeping an eye on conscious and sustainable production.
